The medicine contains the active substance isotretinoin, which belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, structurally related to vitamin A. It decreases the activity of the sebaceous glands, which produce oil in the skin.
The preparation is a prescription drug and is used to treat severe acne, such as acne nodularis, acne conglobata, or acne at risk of permanent scarring that has not responded to standard therapies of systemic antibiotics and topical treatment.
It is recommended that treatment be performed under the supervision or monitoring of a specialist physician (e.g. a dermatologist) experienced in the use of systemic retinoids in the treatment of severe acne and with a full understanding of the risks of isotretinoin therapy and the necessary controls .
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is:
Adults, adolescents and elderly patients
The usual starting dose is 0.5 mg/kg body weight daily (0.5 mg/kg/day).
After a few weeks, the doctor may adjust your dose. This depends on how well you tolerate the medicine. For most patients, the dose is between 0.5 mg and 1.0 mg/kg/day.
If you think isotretinoin is too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
The medicine must not be used in children under 12 years of age.
Impaired kidney function:
If you have severe kidney disease, treatment will often be started at a lower dose (eg 10 mg/day) and then increased to the highest dose your body tolerates.
A treatment cycle usually lasts 16 to 24 weeks. Only one cycle is required for most patients. The improvement in your acne can last up to 8 weeks after treatment. Usually you will only start another treatment cycle afterwards.
Some people find that the acne gets worse in the first few weeks of treatment. Improvement usually occurs as treatment continues.
